Near Yonder: Józef

While a home video plays on a bygone TV set, a Polish woman prepares for the weekly meet with her husband. She irons a fresh set of clothes, fixes her earrings, and arranges flowers before going into the next room. She draws the curtains and lights some candles before turning the space into a psychomanteum—a place where one can communicate with the dead.

On Near Yonder, from director Laurie Bartley: These stories traverse themes of time, dream states, afterlife, healing, and consciousness. I was particularly driven by phenomena that were once entirely mystical and deemed hocus-pocus but are now being reconsidered and analyzed by a growing number of those within the scientific establishment; phenomena such as the survival of consciousness after bodily death, reincarnation, and near-death experiences.
